Chicken Rancher
As you know by now, I've been attempting to provide food for my family & learn from where our food comes. I decided that since we only have a "lot" of land (which doesn't really look like a lot of land) that we couldn't raise a dairy cow sustainably, nor would a goat work well with my small gardening efforts. Chickens seemed like my only reasonable option. My husband was not so excited, but I told him that if chickens were not compatible with our home than he could have barbequed chicken. That seemed to do the trick!
I found a portable chicken tractor on Craigslist with a couple of chickens, so we picked up this deal & brought it home in the back of Michael's Datsun pickup. We looked....yeah, like hillbillies. But I was so excited that I had chickens at last (this has been a long term dream of mine, I know I'm weird)!
I'll shorten this story & give you the punchline. It has been since September 20th & I still have no eggs. The one hen I bought went into a molt & the two pullets aren't quite mature...yet. I'll be sure to post when I get an egg! Until then, the kids are having a wonderful time chasing the chickens around the yard & feeding them scratch. Well worth the money!
